Hotels & Motels in Wawa, ON
Wawa, Ontario is a small lakeside township located in the middle of the province, between the larger cities of Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay. Wawa takes its name from the Ojibwa word for “wild goose”, and these days, the town is identifiable by its large Canada goose statue that perches over the main highway. Although Wawa is a prime destination for its outdoor pursuits—fishing, snowmobiling and hiking the Voyageur Trail are popular pastimes here—it’s not generally thought of as a typical tourist spot but it is a popular stopping over point for people travelling cross-country as the Trans-Canada Highway 17 passes through. And, with its remote lakefront location, visitors would be hard-pressed to find a better place to really get away from it all.
ORIENTATION
Situated on the rugged terrain of the Canadian Shield, Wawa is rather remote. The nearest city, Sault Ste. Marie, is 225 km (139 mi) away, while Thunder Bay is 470 km (291 mi) and Toronto 910 km (565 mi). Driving is the best way to get to Wawa, as the town has no passenger air service and limited bus and train routes.
WHERE TO STAY
As a small town, Wawa doesn’t offer a variety of neighbourhoods so visitors are given two options when choosing a where to stay: within the town or outside of it. The town itself has plenty of offer–friendly shops, eateries and pubs line the streets, and the whole town is easily walkable, even in winter. The Lakeview Hotel on Broadway Avenue is one of the more popular choices in Wawa, as it offers a prime location just half a block from the Wawa Lake. The hotel provides a number of standard and deluxe Jacuzzi suites, and also offers an onsite pub and night club for those who want to experience the Wawa nightlife.
In the south side of town, the Bristol Motel on Mission Road is a unique lodge-style family motel that provides year-round accommodations. They specialize in recreational activities and can set guests up on a variety of hunting, snowmobiling and ATVing adventures in any season. Next door, the 18-room Algoma Motel is another great option, with amenities like free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, in-room fridges and fresh coffee and muffins for guests each morning. Both motels are situated mere steps away from restaurants, as well as a liquor and grocery store.
Travelling south of town on Highway 17, visitors will come across the High Falls Motel and Cabins, offering a range of both motel rooms and traditional log cabins. Features include free Wi-Fi and kitchenettes and high-definition TVs in each room.
Farther south towards the Michipicoten River opens up even more accommodation options. The Mystic Isle Motel is an elegant choice with 14 bright, chalet-style rooms. Nearby, the Best Northern Motel offers both motel and cottage accommodation with features like a billiards room and an outdoor hot tub overlooking the river.
North of the town, accommodation choices are more limited but the Northern Lights Motel is one option, offering colourful motel rooms, Wi-Fi, satellite TV and a games room.
